A Reflective Essay on "My brother's peculiar chicken"

The story “My brother’s peculiar chicken” has a really interesting story that connects the Philippine gambling society, culture, and storytelling. The story reveals both sides of cockfighting in the philippines and gambling, also showing in some scenes how filipino families can get a little bit over the top over small little things when eating together, in which I can relate and confirm to.

In this essay, I would like to talk about how it shows the history of cockfighting and many more, and how it connects to the story.

Gambling - cockfighting to be exact ,an event mostly about gambling on chickens, in which it shows whose rooster is superior to another. In the story the two brothers joined a sabong to confirm if the chicken is a hen or a rooster, which resulted in more confusion at the end. In this part of the story I think it was a really good idea to use sabong in proving the gender of the chicken, though it was never really revealed. Though illegal or legal (depending on where the game is) it will find its way to filipinos, dating back until 6000 years ago cockfighting has been considered as a local sport in the philippines, being regulated in the whole country, cockfighting has found its way in entertaining filipinos for years to come. In my opinion though I think of it as wasting money on a 50/50% chance of winning a gamble, though even in my experience on gambling in online games, we just strive for entertainment and to have fun at. However some may even spend tons of money on something or someone they believe in, causing some to go into debt, which is not an optional choice to do.

Status in the family may or may not mean you're correct at something just because of your status in the family, sometimes causing fights within or outside the family in which the society helps. A scene from the story in which the brother insists on asking for help or, much say, questioning the people within their reach to confirm the gender of the chicken, but results in an unanswered question. Though in filipino history, status has a lot to do with everyday lives in the philippines, having status in the government in means to support the society, while as the society tries to build itself with the government helping, since everyone has their own thinking of something which leads to opinions to be accepted or not. Even though status in society differs from each other, I think in my opinion; having status in society doesn't make any difference to our status as human beings. Though as such people having high status in society may lead to abusing their power for money as such, leading them to be corrupted in such a way

Table etiquette is something to have in every family, especially when eating with others or with each other. In the story in which the two brothers were arguing over the table, with the topic of the chicken’s gender, resulting in the mother complaining about the boys' argument. Usually in filipino families would talk about things that are happening recently, or what happened to each other's day, and stating opinions that would help them in current problems, likings, and would sometimes create a small or heated argument. Though many families would experience this over time to time, it would ruin the mood eating through arguments, In my experience with having my favorite food on the table, while as my sister would argue about things that would may sound stupid or reasonable, stating on my recent sentence before this, it really does ruin the mood of eating.

In conclusion, it really got me into chickens somehow, though the story ended on a confusing turn, it showed many variations of filipino culture which many would find interesting. Connection with people, portraying that we shouldn't always rely on ourselves during small or tough times.

Dreams

Though people say once you’ve fallen asleep you dream about what you’ve wanted or either what you’ve wished for.

The Dream world is a place where people meet while in their sleep, dreams where you can make friends kinda like an online game, but the world of dreams has existed since humanity ever discovered it. Once you have entered the Dream you can dream whatever you wished for just by saying what you want, and dream whatever you want, but it can only be in the Dream world. Once upon a night, Marie went to sleep to enter the dream world, and there Gabriel was waiting for her in the dream world. As they grew up they still met in the dream and played around that world. But one night Marie stopped entering the dream world and Gabriel was wondering what happened so he waited for nights and nights of dreams but the girl didn't come back. Years later the boy is all grown up and he still remembers the girl in his dreams and he decided to search for her. And so, Gabriel searched the whole world, asking people if they knew about Marie. After months of searching, he got injured and was taken to the hospital. The day he was to be discharged, especially when he was about to leave he saw a familiar face, he tried to see who it was and there was Marie laying in a bed, unconscious and unable to dream, Gabriel was relieved and saddened to see Marie in a coma and so the Gabriel stayed by her side.
One night Gabriel was asleep and then suddenly Marie appeared in his dreams seeing her all healed and better, he wondered if it was really her so he tried to talk to her and asked if she was really Marie, and then she replied with a calming “Yes.” and so Gabriel cried happily as he was able to meet and talk to Marie once again, the two of them talked about the things that happened within their lives and how much they have missed each other, as they talked to each other, they also wandered around the dream world going to places that they once went to as kids, they talked for hours and hours keeping up with each other lives.
Finally, they reached the place where they first met, a scenic place as the sun goes down the presence of Marie was suddenly fading. She then said her final goodbyes to Gabriel. Gabriel was clueless and was crying asking why she was saying goodbye to him, as Marie disappeared Gabriel suddenly woke up from his sleep. As he sees Marie in front of him, he held her hand crying as he was hoping she is alive, suddenly the heart rate of Marie was slowing down, Gabriel panicked as he called for the nurses and doctors, who rushed as they went to the emergency room. Hours passed and the boy kept waiting outside the emergency room. later on, he saw a doctor walking up to him and said “I’m afraid she has passed “, he then fell on the floor crying his eyes out, all those months searching for Marie and he sees her in her death bed, and suddenly he remembers the words that Marie said to him before fading away, “I was always laying in bed sick, sleeping and hoping I can get better, seeing the world was my dream, going on adventures, discovering things that seem fascinating, but I couldn’t get better and I was stuck in my bedroom, but then I discovered about the Dream world, and there I met you…, so please see the world on my behalf, my dearest Gabriel.” she said to Gabriel. He couldn’t take the sadness inside his heart.
And next thing he remembered he was at her funeral. After the funeral, he went home and couldn’t believe she passed so he cried himself to sleep. in his dream, he was wandering around the dream world and suddenly he saw Marie also wandering in the dream world, and so Gabriel chase her until she suddenly disappeared from his sight, he woke up knowingly that Marie was still alive but the sadness within his heart couldn’t move on from her death.

MINDANAO
